Celebrating Howard University's Charter Day Convocation 2025
Howard University is gearing up for its annual Charter Day Convocation, a significant event that commemorates the founding of this prestigious university. This year, the festivities will take place on Friday, February 28, and promise to be a memorable occasion for all attendees.
Keynote Speaker: Mayor Muriel Bowser
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser will grace the event as the Charter Day Convocation speaker. Mayor Bowser, who is currently serving her third term, has been a dynamic leader focused on housing, small business growth, economic development, and public schools.
During the Convocation, she will be honored with the President's Medal for Achievement, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the community. Mayor Bowser follows in the footsteps of several Howard alumni who have led the city, including former mayors Walter E. Washington, Sharon Pratt, and Adrian Fenty.
Special Guests: Anthony Anderson and More
Adding to the excitement, actor and Howard alum Anthony Anderson will also be part of the Charter Day festivities. Anderson, known for his roles in television and film, has been a proud advocate for Howard University and its mission. His presence will undoubtedly inspire current students and fellow alumni.
Honoring Distinguished Alumni
The Charter Day Convocation will also celebrate the achievements of notable alumni with the Alumni Awards for Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement. This year's recipients include:
Nelson Leon Adams III (BS ’74), MD: Recognized in the field of medicine, Dr. Adams is a Miami native and a 1974 alumnus of the College of Liberal Arts at Howard University. He has had a distinguished career in obstetrics and gynecology.
Sunny Sumter (BA ’94): Honored in the field of fine arts, Sumter is a leader in the arts community with a degree in music business from Howard University. She has held fellowships from the DeVos Institute of Arts Management and National Arts Strategies’ Chief Executive Program.
Donald Thigpen, Jr., Esq. (JD ’74): Celebrated in the field of law, Thigpen has had an illustrious legal career and is known for his commitment to community service. He earned his juris doctor from the Howard University School of Law and has provided pro bono legal services to those in need.
